This document provides useful information on auctions and auctioneers.

Overview

In New York, auctions and auctioneers may require a license through the local municipality. For a determination of requirements, contact the local municipal government agency. If auctioning real estate (including calling bids), wine, motorized vehicles, as well as holding title to livestock, New York requires additional state licenses.

Auctioneers must register for New York State sales tax and collect sales tax on any taxable goods sold.
